This was a nice book that we bought in Malta (Dec 26-Jan 04), after visiting Lascaris War Rooms. You can see one of the first pages here, in three languages (Italian, Portuguese, English).

Recently, Mackie’s airplane (Spitfire) was found and one of the wings was used in a reconstruction near Ta’Qali old airfield (National Park today)… If you have any chance, try to get this wonderful book.

Cara Diretora,

Muito obrigado por escrever para mim sobre a morte de meu filho. Eu fiquei comovida por saber que ele nunca recuperou a consciência após ser abatido, e assim não ter que suportar qualquer sofrimento terrível. Ele sempre foi um menino de esplêndida coragem - e estou orgulhosa de saber que ele foi um dos defensores de Malta.

Você deve ter visto muitos casos assim - e todos nós pensamos que sua ilha é simplesmente maravilhosa por suportar todos os ataques aéreos contínuos.

Espero, algum dia, quando esta guerra cruel acabar, visitar Malta - e ver onde meu filho está enterrado. Meu marido está no hospital em Durban – em estado de choque. Ele foi bombardeado em Cingapura.

Novamente, meus agradecimentos pela sua amável carta e simpatia.

March 10 1942

Dear Matron,

I thank you so very much for writing to me about my son's death. I was so thankful to know that he never regained consciousness after his crash, and so did not endure any terrible suffering. He was always such a splendid brave boy - and I am proud to know that he has been one of the defenders of Malta.

You must have seen so many cases - and we all think your island is simply wonderful withstanding all the continuing air attacks.

I shall hope, one day, when this cruel war is over, to visit Malta - and see where my boy is buried. My husband is in Hospital in Durban - suffering from shell shock. He was bombed in Singapore.

Again with so many thanks for your kind letter and sympathy.

Vi ringrazio molto per avermi scritto sulla morte di mio figlio. Ero così grata di sapere che non ha mai ripreso conoscenza dopo l'incidente, e così non sopportare qualsiasi sofferenza terribile. E 'sempre stato un ragazzo di splendido coraggio - e sono orgogliosa di sapere che egli è stato uno dei difensori di Malta.

Voi devi aver visto molti casi - e tutti noi pensiamo che la vostra isola è semplicemente meravigliosa per resistere a tutti gli attacchi aerei.

Mi auguro, qualsiasi giorno, quando questa crudele guerra è finita, da visitare Malta - e vedere dove è sepolto il mio ragazzo. Mio marito è in ospedale a Durban - affetti da psicosi traumatica. Lui è stato bombardato a Singapore.
